Oh, My Aching Ankle!

13 things about my sprained ankle

This is just for you, Queenie, because we are starting off with a picture!

1. This is 84 hours after the initial injury. Isn't it pretty?

2. RICE is the best treatment for the first 24-48 hours. Not the food!

3. R=Rest

4. I=Ice

5. C=Compression

6. E=Elevation

7. You can actually hear a snap or pop, like I did, during a sprain.

8. Sprains are often caused my weak ankles like mine. Mine rolled over.

9. It doesn't help if you don't happen to be the most graceful person coming downstairs in tennis shoes with an overnight bag on one arm and a laptop and case on the other.

10. It's about the worst pain I've ever felt, including the pain of having a baby. Or maybe I've just forgotten about that kind of pain!

11. It's humiliating, screaming and hollering in front of my sister and brother-in-law. Why wasn't I doing something cool like doing a basketball layup?

12. Mine is a grade 2 sprain (grades 1-3).

13. An ankle sprain is one of the most common orthopedic injuries - and I got a whole day of the princess treatment. Yes, one day. I would say day two treatment dropped to lady-in-waiting treatment. I took advantage of it!

  6. OWCH - That is a good sprain!

A few tips, once the swelling goes down a bit that my physio gave me:

    1) put a tea towell on a hard floor. Stand on it and use your toes to scrunch it up.

    2) While watching tv or whatever, write out the alphabet using your foot. Will stretch and work the entire ankle.

    3) Even when swelling is down, ice and keep it up longer than you think you have to.

    4) When it is feeling stronger, sand on a stair and have your heel hanging off the step and do toe rises.

    5) Massage the swelling/ blood up as to break it up and help healing.

    6) put a board on a can and stand on it and keep your balance to work at getting all the small fiber muscle back working again.

    Good luck! Poor you.

    Margarettas also promote healing!!!

  12. So sorry about your injury. I've done that to myself several times, and never gracefully or athletically. You might want to make up a good story to explain it, like "I saw a pet store on fire... so I raced in to save all the pets... and I did, but then I saw the nuns trying to cross the street so I had to help them... then I saw an ambulance stuck in traffic so I started directing traffic to help it get through... that's when the orphanage suddenly had to close and I found all the children adoptive parents... and because I was wearing my 5-inch heels at the time, it was just too much strain on my petite little feet and I sexily sprained my ankle just before I got in my hybrid car and took off to sing at the nursing home. What a day! :)

  13. wow! That is nasty! You should be babied longer.
My dd got her foot ran over by the car a few weeks ago and she did not bruise nearly that bad! Of course her cut and pieces of road imbedded in the skin weren't so pretty.
