Heads or Tails

One of my fondest memories as a child is hearing the familiar tinkling sound of an ice cream truck a few blocks away. The second we'd hear the high-pitched, ultra-fast "turkey in the straw" song, we'd run to our mom or dad and ask for a quarter or fifty cents to get something from the musical truck that would shortly be on our street.
We'd meet half the neighborhood kids outside and wait in line for our turn to buy a sweet, creamy treat. I always chose a fudgesicle. Always. We'd stay outside and eat our ice cream with friends from the neighborhood, and I'll never forget a girl we called "Little Linda" who let her dog share her nutty buddy with her every time.

  1. Awww! I miss the ice cream truck! I liked the red, white and blue "Bomb Pops". Fudgesicles were also good, but my dad liked those so much that we frequently had them in the freezer... no need to buy it. When I moved to a different neighborhood, we had a "snow cone man" come 'round instead of the ice cream truck. The snow cone man knew my order and would give me my cherry snow cone with extra syrup, no "top ice"... I guess I really wanted a slushie, not a snow cone.

  2. Awesome memories! I remember running for the ice cream truck, too, and how it was always such a big deal. Fun!

  3. Oh. I remember that song. For me it was the snow cone man that came around our neighborhood. If I was willing to splurge, I'd get a "graveyard" - many flavors on one snow cone.

  6. Excellent H o T!!!! Awwwww, sharing ice cream with her best friend [her dog]....I like that. And, I'd probably have done the same.

Mine is shared. Stop by if you can. But warning, it's a bit different than what you'd probably expect for a summer memory.

  8. I was mowing the grass last week, and for the first time in ages an ice cream truck went by! Little did I know hubby stopped it and got us all some ice cream. It wasn't $.50 anymore, more like $2.50, which is crazy, but it was SO good!

  13. i think i was 7 or 8 before one of the neighbor kids told me that there was ice cream on the "music truck". my MOM had told us it was just a music truck...that we were suppose to dance when it drove by.

can you imagine how pissed she was when one of the crusty little neighborhood kids spilled the beans on the frosty goodness that could be ALL ours if we waved our hands and yelled "STOP".

got to hand it to my mom though...pretty creative...it was a good run while it lasted.

  15. The ice cream truck didn't come to our neighborhood. I've learned since that it was seen regularly in other areas, but not my neighborhood. When my sister was in high school one of her teachers encouraged the class to bring canned goods at Christmas for "the poor people who live in the slums in South Park." South Park was our neighborhood. My sis came home very indignant that day. "Did you know we live in the slums?" My mom's answer was "Yes." No real 'slums' in our small town like you find in the big cities, but ours was the neighborhood favored by escaped criminals and other unsavory characters. I suppose this is the reason we were not visited by the ice cream truck. =)

  18. We lived in the country, so there was no ice cream truck for us. A fudgesicle sounds good. I wish I had some in the freezer.

  21. Now there's one memory I can't share. I don't remember ever seeing an ice cream truck as a kid. I don't think today is any different - we just don't have them around here. You made me sad for what I missed!
