 Collectibles!

According to Hobby Database online, there are 75 million collectors worldwide, and that 42% of American households have at least one collector in the family.  But what do they collect?  Here are a few things...

1. Coins - wheat pennies, Bi-Centennial quarters, Buffalo nickels, American Silver Eagle... coins are a popular collectible.

2. Stamps - This is a pretty old hobby, and their are many online stamp-collecting groups.  People collect stamps with animals, flowers, people, and so on.

Speaking of stamps... I'm going off topic for a minute.  Do you remember those green S&H stamps people used to collect?

I'm probably showing my age, but I remember my mom and grandmother collecting them in the 60's and 70's.  People would get them when they checked out at certain grocery stores, department stores, and gas stations.  The green stamps could be traded in for products from a rewards catalog.  It was basically a loyalty program... but I digress.

3.  Barbies!  Quite a few Barbies are worth a lot of money, but only in good condition.  Alas, my Barbies are in terrible shape up in the attic except for a few Holiday Barbies that I have still in their boxes.

Malibu Barbie could sell for anywhere from $45 to $200 depending on edition and condition.

4. Bells.  I used to collect bells everywhere I went.  I guess I wasn't as "into it" as I became older, but there are collectible bells being sold on eBay.

5.  Cards.  There are baseball cards, Yu-gi-oh cards, Pokemon cards, to name a few.  My son had all of them when he was a little boy.  I think he even had some football cards.  I hope he keeps them in case they are worth some money later.

6. Coca-Cola products.  I have a few items of Coca-Cola memorabilia.  Someday, I would love to do a whole room in various Coke products and decorations.

Source:  This sign sold for over $800 at an auction in 2008.

7. Figurines.  There are so many different brands!  Funko Pop, Dreamsicles, Willow Tree, Hummell, Precious Moments, and many more!  I used to have Dreamsicles.  I still do, actually.  You guessed it!  Many are in the attic.

8. Sports Memorabilia.  These can be extremely expensive.  Rings, jerseys, hats, pins, bobble-heads, posters, balls, trophies, and more.  Both Michael Jordan's and Kobe Bryant's bobble-heads sell for $25 each on eBay.

9.  Spoons.  This is another collectible that has been around forever.  When I was growing up, we had a neighbor who purchased a spoon on every trip she took.  Most of them had either the name of the state, city, or attraction she was visiting.

10.  Thimbles.  Another practically ancient collectible.  I imagine many kids today don't know what a thimble is.

Speaking of thimbles, did your family always argue over who got to be the thimble when playing Monopoly?  Yeah.  Mine neither. I digress again.

11. I Love Lucy.  I used to have a small collection of I Love Lucy items.  I loved her!  She was so funny, and there is no one else like her.  There are dolls, posters, salt and pepper shakers, signs, clothing, plates, ornaments, and so much more.

12. Comic Books.  I wish I had saved my Peanuts, Archie, Linda Lulu, and Ritchie Rich comics from childhood, but I didn't.  Superhero comic books are very popular now.

13. Vinyl Records. I think most people age 50 and up likely have a collection of vinyl records.  I do, my husband does, my sister and her husband do.  I have no idea if anything we have is worth money, though.

I would like to thank Clipart Library for the free images.

All About Me!

1.  I'm a mom of boy/girl twins, age 24, have three older step-children (1 male, 2 female), and 3 grandkids by my step-children (boy twins age 13 and a precious 1 year old girl).  I've been married to the step-kids' father for almost 16 years.  I don't usually call them step-kids except I don't want my readers thinking I gave birth to all five kids! I love all of them the same and was probably more of a mom to the girls than their own mom.

2. My daughter (the twin) just got married in November.  We did a lot of DIY for the photo booth, table decorations, seating chart, ceremony, and even did a candy "bar."

3.  I love doing DIY projects whether it's crafting with wood, flowers, paint, or anything else.

4. I love making cards and scrapbooking.

5.  I also have a sewing machine.  This Christmas I made several pairs of pajama pants, a nightgown, a skirt, and 4 decorative pillows. I use my Cricut Explore to do scrapbooking, card-making, and to create unique shirts.

6. I love to read!  True crime is one of my favorite genres.  I'm currently reading:

7. I love to color!!!!

8. I am a retired teacher, yay!!!!  December 18, 2019 was my last day.

9. I enjoy taking photographs and creating slideshows of them.  I did a slideshow for my father-in-law's 80th birthday.  He's over 90 now!  I like taking nature and wildlife photos.

10. When I was little, I was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect, but it doesn't really cause any problems right now.

11. I had to wear braces on my legs when I was about 2 or 3. Yes, like Forrest Gump.  I only had to wear them at night for two years, though.

12. I have experienced anaphylactic shock twice.  The first time I was about 7 years old, and I had to get a tetanus shot.  Bad idea!  I'm allergic!  The second time, I was 15, and it was a reaction to ampicillan. This one wasn't caught as quickly and I had to get shots of epinephrine to keep my heart beating.  Scary stuff!

13.  I am a Christian; Jesus is my Lord and Savior.  I don't live a perfect life; I'm a sinner who is trying to be better each day.

Thursday Thirteen

13 things I enjoyed as a child.

1. My doll Tatters which I inherited from my sister. My mom made a dress for her, and her hair was styled in two braids. She had a string on the back that you pulled, and she sais some phrases. That is, until I threw up on her and she had to be washed. After that, when her string was pulled, she sounded like the teacher on the Charlie Brown cartoons (wah, waaahhh, wah, wah, waaahhh.) I loved her anyway.
2. I had another doll, Chrissy. She was a big doll, about the size of a six month old but not as heavy. You could make her auburn hair short, medium, or long by pulling the ponytail out from her head.

3. Playing house. We had a “little house” which was really a house with lights, electricity, just no running water. We set up our play house in there. I would also play house during recess by I forming borders at the edge of the woods with the pine needles.
4. For some reason, I really enjoyed making mud pies. Until my sister told me it would taste like chocolate, and I tried it. It didn’t!

5. Barbies. I had regular size Barbies (my favorite had the dark brown, shoulder length hair), medium size Barbies (such as Skipper with the two, long, curl ponytails) and the little ones (like Dawn with the pretty party dress). I could play with them all day!
6. I also enjoyed playing with Lite Bright.
7. Spirograph was fun, making different designs with different colors.
8. I loved to play school. I would set up in our formal dining room. My dolls were the students. I would have lessons for my students, and I would grade their work. No wonder I grew up to be a teacher!

9. I loved playing with my friend’s Easy Bake Oven. My parents never bought me one. I bought one for my daughter, and I still enjoyed playing with it.

10. Pollyanna was a great board game that I still enjoy playing.
11. I enjoyed the Game of Life, mostly because you could get married and have kids as part of your adventure through Life.

12. Freeze tag was a fun game to play outside with the neighbors.
13. I liked riding my golden-colored bike with the glittery banana seat. Ah, childhood memories!

Sunday Scrappin'

Won't you join us with your paper-related crafting? Visit Sunday Scrappin', hosted by the talented Amy, to get all the details and to see what other crafters are doing. It's easy! Post your ta-da's, your to-do's, share your challenge, if you participated, and link back to Sunday Scrappin'.

My Ta-Da's!

1. This was the page I had intended to use for the mono-chromatic challenge. It's my first layout of Cozumel pictures that I've been trying to finish for 2-3 weeks. It's finally done! I used a layout suggestion from 52 Sketches. I used three shades of blue card stock, my paper trimmer, CM round punch, CM wavy trimmer, CM journaling pens, and CM corner rounder. This one, I kept simple.

2. This is the page I intended to use for the "animal" challenge. It has mermaid and fish. It is a premade page I purchased from ebay a while back, so all I had to do was add photos and journaling. I prefer to design my own layouts, but sometimes I see one that is premade that I like, and it saves time when you are as far behind as I am.

3. I didn't get to the lace challenge from weeks ago or to this week's sparkly challenge. I was out of town for almost a week. I did take lots of photos while we were in Arizona, and I can't wait to scrap them.

My To-Do's!

1. Complete at least one 2-page layout for the Cozumel album.

2. Shop for some better adhesives and a new tape runner. Please feel free to recommend what works best for you.

3. Organize my stickers by type: travel, cruise, school, holidays, etc. Mine are in a PSB (paper sticker binder), but does anyone know a way of organizing stickers that is easier and more at your fingertips when you are scrapping? Are there any of you who continue to use stickers, or do you prefer to use other types of embellishments?

Also, does anyone have suggestions on storing embellishments, flowers, ribbons, etc. I have my brads in a case (probably meant to be a tackle box), and I am curious to find out other ways that people organize all of their embellishments together.

Next Week's Challenge, in honor of the July 4th holiday, is to create something patriotic. I think I can do that! Have a good week everyone!

Sunday Scrappin'

Hi everyone! I am so excited school is finally out here. Friday was my last day. Now maybe I can get serious about scrapbooking! I had to completely move my desk and all of my scrapbook supplies this weekend, so I really want to scrap! But that's probably not going to happen until birthday parties are over. My twins turn twelve this month. My son is having his party Wednesday. We're going to an Astros game. My daughter is having a slumber party (sleepover) Saturday. So, instead of scrapbooking, I've been doing other paper-related crafts such as banners, invitations, decorations, and so on. I did PLAN a page (mono-chromatic to meet the challenge), and I got my materials together, but I never had a chance to work on it. Here's a sample of what I did this week:

Those are my only ta-da's. Here's my to-do list:

1. Make two scrapbook pages.

2. Organize my scrapbook paper into my new shelves that came in this week.

That's it!

This week's challenge is to do something with lace. I've already done some wedding pages, so I'm going to have to think of something else that I'd like to use lace with.

Just for the record, it's hot here! Our high was a warm 92. I mention this because Amy said they FINALLY turned on their AC this week. Ours is on almost year-round here in Texas! I can't imagine it NOT being on. I guess that's another reason to like scrapbooking. It's indoors! Happy scrappin'! Click here to see what other scrapbookers have been doing.

Collecting (for Sunday Scribblings)

A few of my Dreamsicles

Some women collect teapots
Other people collect rocks
Some men compare their belts
To see who has a notch.

Some like collecting pennies
Instead of giving them to the poor
Folks also collect spoons and stamps
While others think that’s a bore.

Me? I am a collector.
I have a cabinet-full
Of haloed-angel-babies
That are so meaningful.

Dreamsicles, they are
And I have had them for years.
Each one means something different
Some even bring on tears.

There’s soccer, rainbows, gymnasts,
Friends and family, too.
Membership only figurines,
Having just one won’t do.

The ones that are most cherished
Are the ones about my twins
They remind me every day that
Children are where my life begins.
