Weekly Roundup

This was the first week of school, so I have been rather busy, but I did take the time to read a few blogs.  Below are some of my favorite reads.  I'm linking up with My So-Called Chaos and High-Heeled Love for their weekly roundup.

Chalkboard Clipboard Signs at Organize and Decorate Everything

This DIY is right up my alley since I'm a teacher.  And it seems so easy.  I haven't tried it yet, but I have no doubt that I can make this, and I can envision so many different ways I could use this at home and at school.  All you need is a clipboard, painter's tape, chalk paint, and chalk.  I loved her idea of having her children hold a clipboard with their grade in school for their first-day-of-school photos.  I would like to make one that says, "________ days until Christmas/Valentine's Day/Easter/Summer/or whatever countdown I want.  I can also see it as a welcome sign in my classroom.  What a great idea!



3 Odd Things That Make Me Ridiculously Happy at I'm an Organizing Junkie

I like this post for two reasons.  First, I've been reading OrgJunkie for a while now, and it was fun to read something personal about what she enjoys.  I like when I get to read a post that helps me feel like I know the writer better.  Also, I love what she did with her refrigerator.  Go take a look!

15 Amazing Personal Ads From the ’90s, Presented With Commentary at The Cut

This post was light-hearted and funny!  The author put together 15 real personal ads from a New York newspaper that was in circulation during the 1990's.  Considering that's almost how I met my husband, I found it quite fun to read these!  My husband and I met online via personal ads back when it wasn't cool to meet online - before dating sites existed.  You may remember a website called Excite.com circa 2001?  They published personal ads much like the newspapers once did.  I'm pretty sure our ads sounded nothing like these.  One of them begins like this:  "I'll Shoot My Dog!"  What is up with that?  The commentary on the ads is pretty clever!

Newlifeoutlook - How to Help Someone with Depression


Since my surgery, and a few other family crises, I have been depressed lately.  I also had a car accident Monday last, and that has complicated my emotions further.  Although it was intended for a family member or friend of a person suffering from depression, I believe the person experiencing depression could also benefit from reading it.  I especially thought the information on page 2 was helpful.  Actually, I read a number of articles on the site, and found most of them beneficial.

Organize and Decorate Everything - Back to School Gift Bags for Kids

Considering it's back-to-school time, I thought this was a terrific post!  I wish my kids were still young enough that I could make these gift bags for them, but it does give me ideas for care packages to send to my college students.














Mod Podge Rocks - Scrapbook Embellishments with Mod Melts

I love to scrapbook, and I'm always looking for inexpensive embellishments for my pages.  What I learned from this post is that if I have a silicone mold, a glue gun, and mod melts glue sticks (which come in a variety of colors including metallics), I can make my own embellishments.  Sounds so simple!

It's hard to describe this post, but it is so relevant for me.  It's all about being content with your current state of being.  Take about ten minutes and see what you think.  I definitely got something out of it.




The DIY Playbook - How to Hide a Printer

What a clever idea!  I have a printer on a glass table top that is somewhat of an eyesore.  This easy solution, using a wicker basket, may be perfect for me!  And the steps seem very easy to follow.









Scary Mommy - How to "Win" Every Fight with your Spouse

Everyone argues at some point or other.  Scary Mommy is known, among other things, for sarcasm.  This was a super-fun read, and while tips 1-9 probably constitute what many of us do,  #10 and it's two successive options are actually quite reasonable.

Scary Mommy - 10 Things I Want to Say to my Gynecologist.

The truth!  But not just true, so funny!  You can't miss this one!You will relate to at least one of these things, or maybe even all of them!  Panty rack, tissue paper doily, stretch-a-hoo-ha nutcracker looking contraption.  Go and enjoy the humorous truth.  I love the Scary Mommy site, but I would like to leave comments without first having to register.  That's the only drawback.  I always find things I enjoy reading.






Mom Bloggers Club -  Four Keys to Blogging Success That Never Go Out of Style

Even if you don't want your blog to specifically be a "mom" blog, these are some good, general tips for any blog.  These work for people like me who blog for fun, too.  I love to write, so it would be great if I thought more people were reading my blog, so every now and then, looking at some tips reminds me that there are things I can do to keep my blog current.  I especially like this statement:  They don’t simply write about topics, they take you on journeys.  



OrgJunkie - 5 Ways to Create a Bedroom Sanctuary for a Good Night's Sleep

I love sleep.  I don't get enough of it, but I love it!  And I wish I could get a good night's sleep, so I'm always looking for easy things to do to make sleep better.  This post has a few suggestions that you might like.  It's a sponsored post,  but OrgJunkie always includes lots of practical tips in addition to the things she wants to say about the product.  There's a giveaway included, so you might want to give it a look!

Scary Mommy - If My Kid is Being an A**hole, I Want You To Tell Me

As I plan for the upcoming school year, I can't help but wonder what my new students are going to be like... and what their parents will be like because when students start sixth grade, their parents are still very much a part of the educational process.  Susie Johnson, the author of this post, is REAL.  And humorous,  I wish my students' parents could be more like her,  However, they are more likely to deny their angel has done anything questionable.  Not all of them, you understand, but enough of them to matter.  I enjoyed this post.

Salt and Pepper Moms - DIY Painted Lockers

I love these retro lockers!  I believe she has them in her mud room.  Here in Texas, we don't have mud rooms, but I could see this in the garage or even in my classroom.  The hardest part for her was finding them at a decent price, so I should probably start now.

This post is from I'm an Organizing Junkie.  It is a great resource with all types of recipes from beef to vegetarian to appetizers to desserts, and everything in between.   Each recipe has nutrition info, links to where the ingredients might be on sale, pictures, ratings, and reviews.  You can also create a printable shopping list.  I think this site could be very useful.

Weekly Roundup

Just a few posts to share this week.

I read a post on Mother Mag about relationships.  The number 1 problem between couples is.... not money... not sex... communication!  This post discusses a few areas that couples can identify in their own relationships to make communication less an issue.  I definitely recognize myself in some of these, and I need to work on them.

Another great read this week was from Becoming Minimalist.  Since we are moving out of the dorm and de-cluttering the home during our spring cleaning, I thought this post was interesting.  21 Surprising Statistics That Reveal How Much Stuff We Own.  If I didn't already want to do some spring cleaning, I do now!

Last, not least, is a post about Pentecost.  I've heard the word all my life. I grew up in a Methodist church, and while we didn't celebrate Pentecost, necessarily, as a holy day, it was mentioned. One of my best friends growing up was Pentecostal, and my uncle was an Assemblies of God preacher, which is a Pentecostal church.  Next week is Pentecost Sunday, but I admit I never really knew what that meant.  I read an article at Patheos titled What is Pentecost?  Why Does it Matter?  It explained so well and makes so much sense now. Whether you are a Christian or not, this post is enlightening and sheds some light on the early history of the Church.

I only have two posts that I felt worth sharing this week.

I used to be so organizing, and as my kids are growing up and leaving the nest, I am feeling the urge to get organized again!  I love this post from Organizing and Decorating Everything about using baskets in the kitchen.

There was a great post on Popsugar:  20 Ways to Ensure Workouts Happen Every Day.  I don't work out every day, but I can use all the motivation I can get in order to work out a few times a week.  There were some creative tips.

Found this wonderful post at So Dam* Domestic!  3 Morning Routine Mistakes.  I make two of these mistakes almost every single day.  I knew I was doing something wrong!  Ha!

I love to feel organized, although I am much less so lately.  This post on Real Simple offers 7 Smart Organizing Tricks.  Number 1 makes so much sense!

Last, but definitely not least is a post titled Saturday Art : Water Fairy on Time Out for Mom.  She shows off some amazing photos and clever ideas.  You really must see it to appreciate it.

Create an organized command center for your home.  Sometimes keeping everyone on track is difficult.  I think I'm an Organizing Junkie makes everything simple to do.

What has society come to?  Cell phones and social media during worship?  Based on personal experience, this can be quite frustrating.  Take a minute to weigh in on this topic.

I have often dreamed of getting paid for writing.  The task seems so daunting with the possibility of failure a real threat.  This site gives 54 companies that accept freelance writing.

Do you ever try DIY projects?  I found this great post showing how to repurpose thrift store items.  I would like to spruce up my home decor, but of course, I'm on a budget.  Some of these ideas will really work for me.
