It's Random Tuesday

Time to link up with Stacy for Random Tuesday Thoughts.

Happy Mother's Day (somewhat late) to all the moms out there!  I hope your day was special.  I had a great weekend.  We spent time at my sister's on Saturday, then on Sunday, I spent time with my twins, then my daughter took me shopping.  Now that she is working, she can do that.  Role reversal!
Here is a picture of my mom, sister, and me.
Seems we can't all look at the same camera at the same time!  And here is a picture of my twins with me.
Not a great one, but a picture of us nonetheless.  GREAT Mother's Day!  I hope yours was, too.

State testing is half over for my grade level.  Did you know that high-stakes tests such as the STAAR (given in Texas) cost upward of 93 million dollars a year?  Did you also know that schools have seen a decrease rather than an increase in actual achievement?  It also doesn't improve teacher performance.  Why the big push, then, for standardized tests?  My personal opinion is that the company who creates the tests is making a ton of money.  I'll get off my soapbox now!

What was your favorite book as a child?  I loved Dr. Seuss!  Go, Dog, Go, Are You My Mother, and of course, Green Eggs and Ham were some of my favorites. How about you?  Here's a crazy guy (via Flicker) reading Dr. Seuss to his dogs!

How fun is that?

That's all for this week!  I'm exhausted (from state testing, in case I forgot to mention it).

A Random Post

I'm linking up with Stacy!

So happy to have seen my twins this past weekend.
My daughter's school has an annual event called Sing-Song.  It's a pretty big deal.  My husband and I picked up my son from his college and headed to Abilene.  A. very. long. drive.  But I'm so glad we did it!  I'm even happier that her social club won first place in two categories and second in the third category.
They get $1,000 to give to the charity of their choice, in this case, an organization about Diabetes.  They had a young sister pass away in her dorm room, likely from side effects of diabetes, so they wanted to make that contribution in her name.

I've been missing so much sleep lately.  I'm tired, but I can't get sleepy.  If I get into bed when I'm not sleepy, I will just lay there and fret.  Then, I can't sleep at all.  But I have to get up early and go to work, so... days off that are coming up will definitely include a nap.

My husband and I ate at Outback last night, which I usually enjoy.
This time, though, the seasonings on my steak were so strong I could barely eat it.  I even tried wiping it off, but that only helped a little.  I have never had a steak there that I didn't like,  But I loved the strawberry peach sangria!

That's all for now!

Totally Random and a Coffee Chat

Have you ever wondered why they put nipples on mannequins?  Isn't the purpose of a bra (well, at least one of the purposes) to hide your nipples under your clothes?  So they build mannequins with nipples and don't put bras on them.  Yeah.  That makes perfect sense!

Ryan Anderson (Houston Rockets) and Evan from the Bachelorette/Bachelor in Paradise... Similar? They remind me of each other.

Now that they are side-by-side,  I only see it a little bit.  I mean, I can tell why one reminds me of the other, but they really don't look much alike.  Facial hair?  Hair color? Hmmmm.

Today, coffee chat asks us:
Create a phrase or statement, that you carry
with you throughout the coming year.

I've never given that much thought.  I don't have a mantra.  I guess I could take this Facebook quiz which will tell me my mantra, based on.... what?  Let's find out.
That's a pretty good mantra, I suppose.  But it's not something I would say.  I'd say something snarky like, "It is what it is."  Or "The glass isn't half empty or half full; either way, it's got the same amount of liquid in it."

Maybe my mantra should be, "Don't rock the boat," based on things that are going on in my life lately.  It could also be, "You can't be right every time."

Or perhaps I need a Biblical mantra such as, "Judge not, lest ye be judged," or "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."

Oh, who knows?!  I think I'll just decide my mantra on the fly as things happen!

Have a great week!

Random Tuesday and Coffee Chat

I'm linking up with Stacy.

If something seems too good to be true, it probably is.  Take the spray on nail polish, for example.  I purchased a small, almost trial size, to see how it works.  What they don't tell you in the commercial is that you must use a base coat, two coats of Spray Perfect, and a top coat.  I left out the base coat.  You have to use a top coat because the polish dries into a rough, matte finish. It's fairly easy to wipe off the skin, though.  But, even with a top coat, it didn't last.  This is what my toes looked like after less than 24 hours.

Who has time to paint their nails every day?  I was looking for something to save me time and money, as compared to a pedicure, but this didn't do either.  Oh, well.

Moving on... The lovely Texas fall weather we are having here is... not fall weather.

And something else they say about Texas... "If you don't like the weather, wait a few minutes and it will change."

And now it's time for Coffee Chat!

Our hostess asks us...
It's now only a month until Christmas!!   Panic now.
If you are the calm and collected type, do please share
some of your secrets to surviving holiday stress.

Weeelllll, I have a gift for my mom.  I started on two handmade gifts.  Started.  Haven't been very diligent about it.I will probably have surgery the week before Thanksgiving, so, if I'm going to do any gifts, I better get started in earnest.  I'm sad because my arm will be in a sling to keep it at a specific angle, so I won't be able to decorate.  I think this will be a "light" Christmas for me, but that's not necessrily a bad thing.  My only advice is to say, :no," for every other extra thing you are asked to do.

That's all this week!

Oh, America, and Other Random Stuff

I'm linking up with Stacy.

Oh, Lawdy!  After watching (part of) the debate, I am convinced that America, we have a problem.  Listening to Hillary and Donald, I feel that we're doomed, regardless of who wins.  I really avoid political conversations on the blog, but really?  This is who we have to choose from?  I realize they both have their good sides and they both have things of which they should be ashamed, but I just can't believe we don't have a better choice.  And did anyone else think that they had earpieces in so they could get advice on what to say as they were saying, or perhaps, teleprompters?

Moving on...
The state of division in our country is unacceptable.  I believe there is a much greater divide between the races than there has been since the 1960's and there's so much spite and disdain for police, educators, and community leaders.  What can we do to repair these relationships?  I don't have the answers!  But here I go getting "political" again.  I'll stop.  Promise.

My daughter finally convinced me to download Snap-chat.  Big mistake!  What a time-waster!  But what fun!  We have laughed and laughed at ourselves looking like aliens, bees, and frowny faces. I've got only 3 "friends" or whatever they're called on Snap-chat.

I had a scare with my son.  He's been sick since last week.  First it was pink eye.  The "Doctor" at the Quack Shack on campus failed to give him antiobiotic drops for his eye.  (How does THAT happen?)  He developed other symptoms.  He went to a different doctor off campus.  They ran strep and flu tests, which were negative, gave him a shot, some antiobiotics, and some antiobiotic drops for his eye. He continued to get worse.  His fever spiked, and he had a stiff neck.  Now THAT's scary!  I made him go back to the Quack Shack, but all they did was run the flu test again and give him Sudafed and Ibuprofin.  He had the meningitis vaccine three years ago; it's the law, but now they say there is another strain that can be just as deadly, and I know he only got one type.  The fever and stiff neck just scare me!

So, what do you think of the fall shows that have started?  I'm continuing to watch the Big Bang Theory, even though it's becoming unfunny.  And I'm still enjoying Grey's Anatomy, How to Get Away with Murder, and Once Upon a Time.  I watched the pilot of Designated Survivor, but I'm not sure about it yet.  Any recommendations?

Have a great week!
