Did you know it's Teacher Appreciation Week?  What goodies are you sending your little ones to school with for teachers?  There are tons of easy, inexpensive ideas on Pinterest! 

Some restaurants are giving teacher discounts this week, but middle school teachers and above go largely unnoticed by their students.  It's just the way it is, I guess.  Younger children love their teachers and aren't embarrassed to show it.  That changes some as they grow up.  Our administrators have surprises for us every day this week, though.  Even Google knows it's Teacher Appreciation Week.

Here's some weird news!  Two Florida women, ages 22 and 25, were stopped by traffic officers. The women had 41 baby turtles in a backpack but the kicker is the 25 year old has a baby alligator "hidden" in her yoga pants!  Crazy, huh?

Sunday Synopsis

The Tiger Rising by Kate DiCamillo
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book came to me highly recommended as a young adult novel to read to my classes. My students loved it. It had some great characters, imagery, action, realistic situations, and themes that they could relate to. DiCamillo's writing made a good exemplar for the students as well. It might be considered a children's book, but I think it's more appropriate for middle grades and older.

The main character is 12 year old Rob who lives in the Kentucky Star Motel because his dad works there. One morning while walking through the woods behind the motel, he finds a tiger in a cage. On the same day, he also meets Sistine, a girl who becomes a very good friend.

Rob Horton is such a relatable character. He has lost his mom to cancer and keeps his feelings bottled up inside. Sistine Bailey's dad has run off and she wears her feelings like a polyester pant suit. Together, these two will steal your heart.

Kate DiCamillo also authored Because of Winn-Dixie, one of my favorites. The Tiger Rising was a finalist for the National Book Award in 2001.

As I was perusing Crimefeed, my new favorite website (I guess it's not my favorite, but it's interesting)... there was a story that will make you smile.  A great-grandmother in Florida fought off a 300 pound would-be robber with a baseball bat.  Got him good, too!  She heard a noise outside, grabbed the bat, and yelled at the man.  He charged her, and she hit him with the bat.  He got up, ran away, and hid, but the police found him easily as he had shed his clothes along with way.  Wacky, huh?

And speaking of bats, the Astros are doing well.  Right now they are 17 and 11 which is .607%. 

And continuing with sports, the Rockets have had a good season, but the round 2 first playoff game did not go as well as it should have.  I usually dislike when fans blame the refs, but, interestingly enough, this time, it was true!  In the last two minutes of the game, the NBA acknowledged there were at least 3 missed calls, one of them being on the potential game-tying shot.  Here is one of them:

These 3 calls completely changed the outcome of the game.  Warrior win 104 to 100.  If you're interested, you can read about it here.  We'll get 'em next time!
