Mirror, Mirror, A Legal Thriller by Deborah Hawkins

What a great thriller! Don't give up early on this one. At first, it seems like two different stories, but these stories collide in a way you can't imagine.

Hawkins' writing reminds me of John Grisham. I love a legal thriller! This was hard to put down.

Jeff Ryder, a former assistant DA, has worked his way up to partner at a prestigious law firm only to lose it in the same day when and "Innocence Project" lawyer files suit against him claiming he coerced testimony from a witness several years prior. The trial involved two small-time criminals who shot a police officer who responded to a burglary. The police officer, Chris Rafferty, was left a quadriplegic.

Ryder loses his expensive lifestyle, moves to a crummy apartment, and hangs his shingle in a little office in a strip mall. In the process of trying to clear his name, he finds evidence that the body armor Officer Rafferty was wearing was defective. He meets with the family and agrees to sue the San Diego Police Department and the maker of the body armor on behalf of the family.

When Ryder is accused of murder, he has an alibi, but that alibi will ruin the Rafferty's relationship and possibly their case.

This is truly a thriller full of suspense and surprises. It will keep you on the edge of your seat!

Random Tuesday

Howdy!  I'm linking up with Stacy for some randomness.

What a great time of year for sports!  Our Houston Astros have won 9 games in a row.  They swept the Yankees and swept the Mariners.  They are on a roll to TAKE IT BACK!










Tiger Woods won his fifth Master's.  That golf course in Augusta, Georgia is absolutely gorgeous!








Our Houston Rockets have taken game 1 in the first round of playoffs against the Utah Jazz.  What a great last few days it's been!

I'm still contemplating whether I am going to retire from teaching this year or next.  I've put in 30 years with only one year off (in which I subbed).  The principal I work for is making decisions that will directly have a negative impact on teachers, but not students.  It seems to me that she should make decisions that impact students positively without upsetting and angering teachers.  It may be why 8 or 10 teachers are retiring and 4 or 5 have requested transfers.  I don't know.  It's a tough decision.  I would still need to work, but I could make up the deficit between my salary and my retirement check by working part time.  It's been on my mind so much lately.

Thirty-Two Going on Spinster by Becky Monson

I got this book free with my Amazon Prime Reading Membership. It was not my typical genre, but I enjoyed it. It was a cute "chick-flick" type story, a little predictable, just enough humor, a dash of mystery, a pinch of fashion, and a lot of baking.

The main character is 32 year-old Julia Dorning who lives in her parents' basement with her cat, Charlie. She is stuck in a dead-end job with a boss who has absolutely no personality. She shares gossip with her work-friend which keeps her from dying of boredom. Then along comes newly-hired Jared Moody who quickly becomes Julia's secret crush. With the help of her 10-years-younger sister, Julia begins to make some changes, hoping to avoid her spinster fate, but when a BIG change happens at work, Julia is forced to make some unexpected changes.

This book is the first in a series of three. It's a fun, easy read!

The Fightin' Texas Aggie Bonfire was a tradition begun in 1907.  It lasted until 1999 when 12 Aggies lost their lives in a horrible accident.  You can read about the significance of each part of the memorial, as well as the tradition, here.
