Random Happy Tuesday

I hope everyone had a great Christmas.  Ours was... different.  Several family members were sick that we didn't get to see at all.   We only got to see 1 of 5 of our children.  But we made the best of things! I did get to see my mom, sister, b-i-l, nephew, and his wife.  He got to see his dad.  We still have the tree up partly because there are still presents under it and partly because I think it's beautiful and wish we had lighted trees up all the time!

New Year's Eve is coming up.  I'm sure we'll be staying home.  I hope all of our kids do, too.  I worry so much.  Not just about them, but about all the other crazy people in the world.

And no, I'm not making resolutions or a mantra or anything like that.  I have my own goals in my head, and it doesn't take the New Year to remind me to shoot for those goals.  How about you?  Are you a resolution-maker?

Without further ado...

And last, but not least...

No Resolutions for Me

The new year is a time for reflection. For many people it's also a symbolic time to decide to quit a bad habit or form a new, good habit. But I stopped making resolutions a few years ago. While making a resolution shows good intentions for instituting a postive change, I prefer to set my goals as I go along based on my needs at a particular time.

If you decide to make resolutions, just remember that change is gradual. It doesn't happen overnight, and it involves willpower and discipline. Here's an article to help you keep your resolutions. I wish you the best in 2009!

New Friends - Sunday Scribblings

The theme for Sunday Scribblings this week is “new.” It could be new hopes, new dreams, or new year’s resolutions.

“The shortest distance between new friends is a smile.”
Unknown

A few days ago, my son and his friend were riding in the back of my Forerunner on our way to spend Christmas gift cards. They were playing a game where they waved at people in other cars and tried to get the people to wave back at them. They decided that the people who waved back were nice, and the people who didn’t wave back were “sour.”

As we were walking in to Target discussing their poor results (1 in 5 waved back), I told them to smile at people because if you smile at someone, they will smile back. I believe that is true, and we had fun putting the theory to the test. I'm going to take my own suggestion and try to smile more. People can’t help but smile back, and it fits with my intention to project happiness even when I might not be feeling very happy. Maybe in the process, I will make a new friend. I am reminded of a song we used to sing at Campfire Girl camp:
"Make new friends, but keep the old, one is silver and the other gold. "
