I think strict grammar lessons have gone the way of the dinosaur; well, in Texas public schools I KNOW they have, but I believe it's true of colleges as well.
I have a few grammar-related pet peeves. And I think that people in the publishing business or those who work in news outlets really should know these. This week, I've heard several things that were wrong grammatically. Annoying! And unacceptable. Schools don't do diagramming anymore. I loved it. It was like a puzzle! Some college students think speaking the language correctly is unimportant.2
Prepositions. First, objects of prepositions use the objective case which includes me, you, him, her, us, them. Even my best friend says this wrong. Between you and I, for example, is incorrect, Or, the Emmy goes to him and I. Again, incorrect. It should be him and me. Take out the words "him and." Would you say the Emmy goes to I? I think not.
There are other pet peeves, like alot written as one word, and irregardless, which isn't a word at all.
News people, take note. You should know this!
