Happy Tuesday and Random Nonsense

I imagine that most of you watched the super bowl like we did.  It was tense, to say the least!  What did you think of the half-time show?  It was pretty spectacular, but not my favorite.  I think Lady Gaga's and Katy Perry's are my favorites in recent memory.

What did you think of the commercials, because, let's face it, that's why many of us watch!  According to USA Today and the 160, 000 people that registered to vote for commercials, the best one was State Farm's "Like a Good Neighbaaa."

That was pretty funny, but my favorite was the "Mayo"  commercial from Hellmann's, which only ranked 12.

What can I say?  I'm a cat lover!  Here's a link in case you didn't see it. Mayo/Meow!

Some of the Superbowl memes are pretty funny...

This is my fave, and probably true!

Happy Random Tuesday- Getting Ready for the Big Game!

Are you ready for some football?  I'm not a huge fan, but I'll be watching, of course.  Mainly for the entertainment and the commercials, though.  Which team will win?  I have no idea, and I have no dog in this fight, but I do know that it is the same matchup as 2020, and KC won that one.  I also know that however old I am, that's the same for the Superbowl.  The SB started the year I was born.  Now if I could just remember those darn Roman numerals!  😉

I hope the commercials are better than they have been the last few years. The halftime shows have been pretty good. The performer is usually someone I'm a little familiar with, but not someone I listen to frequently.  For example, I only know a handful of Lady Gaga songs, but she is amazingly talented, and her halftime show in 2017 was dazzling!  Anyway, I think Usher will be fun to watch.

Moving on...

Have a great week and don't forget to visit Random Tuesday Thoughts and Happy Tuesday.

Thursday Thirteen past Olympics

I wanted to post this last week before the games ended, but I was so busy!  There are several former Olympians that stand out in my memory. Some may stand out for you because they were popular icons in their time.

1. Mary Lou Retton - There will be a lot of gymnasts on this list because it's my favorite sport!  She won a gold, two silvers and 2 bronzes.  She was the first American female to win gold in gymnastics, and she achieved the perfect 10 twice!

2. Greg Louganis - He won four gold medals in diving (another sport I like to watch)in the '84 and '88 Olympics.  Now he is a motivational speaker.  I remember him mostly because he hit his head on the springboard and opened up a whole controversy about not stating that his blood had tested HIV positive. That was a big deal in those days.

3. Nadia Comaneci - Another gymnast, 14 years old, from Romania, who scored a perfect 10 4 years before Mary Lou Retton.  This was a score people previously thought was unreachable.  She is also why Bella Karolyi became famous.

4.  Florence Griffith Joyner - FloJo had the mojo!  In 1988 she set world record for the 100 and 200 meters.  Unfortunately, she passed away due to epilepsy in 1988.

I can't mention FloJo and not mention the next one, her sister-in-law.

5. Jackie Joyner-Kersee - She has participated in 4 different Olympics.  She's got dozens of medals and awards and has been called the greatest female athlete in the world.  She still holds the heptathlon record.  She runs her own foundation in St. Louis.

6. Mark Spitz - He competed in the 1968 and 1972 Olympics as a swimmer.  He won numerous medals, but I remember him for 2 unusual reasons.  1, his name rhymes with Schlitz (a lager my dad occasionally kept in the refrigerator) and 2.  his mustache.

7.  Maggie Nichols - You may not have heard her name before because she was excluded from the 2016 Olympics, partly because she was recovering from an injury and partly because she had just reported Larry Nassar, the USA gymnastics team physician, for sexual harassment.  If you've never watched the Netflix documentary Athlete A, I highly recommend it.

8. Gabby Douglas - What a fantastic gymnast and a beautiful, graceful woman!  She's also just six months older than my twins.  She has won many medals and does not give up when faced with a stressful situation.  She also wrote an autobiography titled Grace, Gold, and Glory: My Leap of Faith.  Mattell also used her as a model for gymnast Barbie.

9.  Nancy Kerrigan - She was a figure skater who I remember, not because she did well, although she did, but because Tonya Harding planned an attack on her right leg, her landing leg, out of jealousy.  It was publicized so much; who could forget?

10. Usain Bolt - The lightning bolt broke so many records and won multiple gold medals in multiple Olympic games.  But everybody loves that pose!

11. Kerri Strug - This little gymnast did her second vault with torn ankle ligaments and stuck the landing guaranteeing the women's team a gold medal.  That's spunk!  And loyalty!  She later became a teacher, but now she works for the US DOJ at the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.

12. Laurie Hernandez - She's so cute and perky on the beam and the floor!  She also represents Hispanic athletes since she is Puerto Rican and is coming out soon with a documentary on Peacock called True Colors.  It's also come to light that Laurie (and others) suffered abuse by her coach who has been banned from coaching gymnastics for a number of years.  I had her autobiography on my nonfiction reading shelf when I was a teacher.

13. Jesse Owens - This track star belongs on this list due to the racial prejudiced he endured in the 1936 Olympic Games held in Berlin under Nazi rule.  He sure showed them!  He came away with multiple gold medals and gave a lot of people hope.

Random Thoughts

I'm linking up with Stacy for Random Tuesday Thoughts.
I'm so proud of our Houston Astros for choosing to accept the invitation to visit the White House.  Regardless of who is in office, it is an honor and a privilege to visit our nation's capitol and meet with the President of the United States.

The president of business operations had this to say when the Astros received the invitation:

“This is a tradition and an honor. For many people, this might be their only time to ever be invited to the White House,” Astros president of business operations Reid Ryan told the Houston Chronicle at the time. “And as the representatives of baseball and the World Series champs, when the White House calls and invites you to come up, it’s something that as an organization we felt both a responsibility and an obligation to be part of.” (Source)

Putting politics aside to be honored for your outstanding performance is a characteristic of a true champion.

And in other sports news... Our Houston Rockets are number one in the league right now!  I would be so thrilled if the Rockets won the championship, too!

And on another note... This animated Uncle Ben's commercial seems to come on frequently, and every time it does, it creeps me out.

Why, you ask?  It's the song.  A little kid is singing Peter Frampton's "Show Me the Way."  I was a teenager when that song was popular.  It became a hit after it was released on Frampton Comes Alive in 1976.  Some of the original lyrics:

I watch you when you're sleeping
And then I want to take your love
Oh won't you show me the way
I want you day after day

So when I hear a little kids singing some of these words (albeit not all of them), it seems creepy to me.

And this is creepy...

Did Amazon ever figure out what was causing the creepy laugh?  Was it a hoax?  Or was it genuinely a glitch that has been fixed?  I never really heard the outcome.

And this- this is definitely NOT creepy!  It makes me laugh every time, no matter how many times I've seen it!

And that's all I have for today!  Have a happy week!

Random Tuesday

Hello all!  I'm linking up with Stacy.

How 'bout them Eagles?  I don't really care much about football, but it's really exciting for them.  I was so proud to be a Houstonian when the Astros won the World Series.  I'm glad this gives Philadelphia a cause for celebration.  I don't understand the riots, though.  That is just not a way to demonstrate your pride.

And how 'bout that Ryan McKenna?  What a lucky and exciting night he had taking selfies with Justin Timberlake.  I bet he gets all the girls now!

But the commercials this year?  I was underwhelmed.  I think my least favorite was the Doritos Blaze vs. Mountain Dew Ice, even though Morgan Freeman is one of my favorite actors.  The TurboTax Thing Under the Bed was seriously freaky.  Actually, it's probably my least least favorite.  The M&Ms commercial with Danny DeVito  and the Alexa loses her voice were on the humorous side.  I got bored with all of the ads for new movies, though.  You can watch them ALL (plus the halftime show) HERE.

Since my daughter graduated from college, she is living at home right now.  I love it, but she doesn't, so she is actively looking for a job.  Things are done waaayyyy differently now than they were when I was her age.  Anyway, she cooks dinner at least once a week, which I could definitely get used to!  Here's what she made tonight (and it was delicious!):
Roasted Veggie Trapanese Pesto Pasta with Chicken Sausage  - Click for Recipe

I can't wait to eat something cooked by my husband in his new birthday present.  I got him this smoker, and I'm pretty sure he likes it and that after he cooks in it, he will love it.  I know I will!
Have a great week!

World Series Champions!

Here in Houston, we've waited 55 years (For me, only 52) for the Astros to win a World Series.  They have only been to one previous World Series in 2005, and, of course, they lost.  But we're winners now, and it's great for our morale.  Many in Houston are still recovering from Hurricane Harvey damage, including my in-laws. The World Series win brings us all together regardless of income, status, race, employment or lack thereof.  It doesn't matter.  We are ONE.

And did you see Carlos Correa propose to his girlfriend?  So sweet!  And of course, she said, "Yes!"

Did you know that, 3 years ago, in 2014, Sports Illustrated predicted the Astros would win the 2017 World Series?  Crazy, right?  George Springer is on the cover, and there is it in print...

"Your 2017 World Series Champs."  How did they know????  A guess, sure, but they must know things about baseball that the average Joe doesn't know.  And there will be a parade today at 2:00 PM to honor the Astros.  I can't take off work, but my son and his friends will be there.

I'll catch you on the other side of the field!
I couldn't be more proud and excited for these guys!

Random Tuesday

I'm linking up with Stacy for some Random!

Wow!  So much going on in the Houston area right now.  The Houston Astros are headed to the World Series.  The only other time they've been to the WS was in 2005, and they didn't win.  I hope they can do it this time.  For a team that's been together as long as they have, since 1962, it's unbelievable that they've only been one other time.  They are #earninghistory for sure!

And the Rockets home opener was this past Saturday, too.  They won 4 of 5 preseason games, and they have a 3-1 record in the regular season.  They even beat Golden State in the very first game of the season.  It looks to be a very exciting year..

This weekend, I also had the opportunity to see Gerry Brooks in person.  He came to Houston for "Celebrate Educators."  You may have seen some of his funny videos on Facebook or YouTube.  It's quite possible they won't seem funny unless you're a teacher or know a teacher well, but I think he's hilarious.  He's also funny in person, but he showed his serious side by reminding us the best ways to deal with colleagues, parents, and students.  And you know what the best part was?  Ending in prayer!  I thought that was awesome!

I wish my week had started off as well as my weekend... horrible headache!  But I'm going to have a great week anyway.  And you are, too!
