Today while watching baseball, I heard this:  "Something is afoot. " You may know I love to figure out where idioms come from and what they mean.  So here goes...  I got a fairly boring response.  It means that an activity is in progress.  It also sometimes implies that something secret or surprising is happening behind the scenes. " Ahhhhh, something is afoot I see."  Imagine the voice I heard in my head as I typed it out!

The word afoot first appeared in the 13th century(around 1275) in Middle English texts, such as the writings of the poet Laȝamon. The famous phrase "the game is afoot" was first recorded later by William Shakespeare in his play King Henry IV, Part 1 around 1597. And that's about all there is to it!

Enjoy the funnies!

Happy Soccer (Futbol) Tuesday!

You know what's weird?  My first time serving on a jury back in the 90's was a case where we had to decide which company had the Spanish language rights for televising soccer (futbol) games for the World Cup.  At the time, I thought it was the most boring thing to be arguing about.  Both companies breached their contracts, and both were awarded money from the other one, but it was basically a wash.  Who knew then that futbol was going to become so popular?  I say "so popular" because of all the fans that follow their teams, and the sheer numbers of people who attend the fan fests, one of which was in Houston.  I'm still not wowed by the game of futbol.  To me, it just moves so slowly, and I don't like when a match ends in a tie.  That doesn't happen in my favorite sports:  Baseball and Basketball.  Anyway, just a previous personal interaction with soccer.  Are you keeping up?  Looks like there are 3 games to go.

And now... How about some soccer puns?

Ghoul Keeper!

Because she's always running away from the ball!

Because they prefer watching cricket!

That's when I knew he was a keeper!

I missed the fireworks.

This past weekend I was at a retreat, so I didn't get to see any fireworks!  I heard the ones at the National mall were post-poned for several hours due to rain.  I would have liked to have seen our hometown fireworks.  Those for the 4th largest city in the US must have been fabulous!  But, alas, all I could do was hear the amateur pyro from where I was. Oh well.

And right now, I'm eating slightly expired yogurt and wondering what's going to happen to me!  Wish me luck!

A Random Person Puts Your Napkin in Your Lap

First of all, I'm wondering why it is customary to put our napkins in our laps when we eat.  Supposedly, one reason is to protect your clothing from spills.  But... I usually get stuff on my shirt when I spill, not my lap.  Anyone else?

Second, it signals the waiter you are ready to eat.  I'm not buying that.  A closed menu is usually what lets a waiter know you're ready.

Third, it keeps soiled napkins off the table.  Now, I can see this being a reason.

But... how do you feel about going to a fancy restaurant and this person you haven't even officially met yet is putting your napkin in your lap for you.  Do you allow this, or are you like my husband and rush to put your napkin in your lap so when the waiter gets there, it's already done. What do you think?

I love a good pun!

A Tip for You

Do not get in an elevator if you need to go to the restroom.

Ask me how I know.

Luckily it was a few short minutes, so I didn't have time to truly panic.  I took the stairs after that.

How many times did you groan at those?  Hope you have a great week, and don't get stuck in an elevator!  And remember to visit Happy Tuesday and Random Tuesday Thoughts.

It's Tuesday Somewhere

I recently dined at an Italian restaurant which had handmade pizzas on the menu.  One of the ingredients really stood out.  It said, "foraged mushrooms."  Now, it's my understanding that foraged means that you go out, search for, and harvest wild food from nature.  Do you think they really have people who go out and do that?  How do they know they are safe to eat and not just some toadstool they found in the park?  I find this description questionable.  What do you think?

The NBA finals start tomorrow, and I'm really looking forward to it.  I'm going to have to root for San Antonio since I'm from Texas.  Will you be watchin, or Nah?

Funny that neither of them made it to the finals this year!

What Kind of Store Is It?

I had to go to the drugstore today to pick up a prescription.  Does anyone even call those places drugstores anymore?  Or just pharmacies?  They are so much more than just pharmacies!  They're department stores!

They have...

4.       Laundry detergent

5.       Pet Food

6.       Immunizations

7.       OTC medication, supplements, and first aid

8.       Greeting cards and wrapping supplies

9.       Makeup and beauty supplies

10   Printer supplies

11   Clothing (tees, socks, and more)

12   Hair care

13   Groceries and snacks (even frozen dinners and milk)
