A Random Person Puts Your Napkin in Your Lap

First of all, I'm wondering why it is customary to put our napkins in our laps when we eat.  Supposedly, one reason is to protect your clothing from spills.  But... I usually get stuff on my shirt when I spill, not my lap.  Anyone else?

Second, it signals the waiter you are ready to eat.  I'm not buying that.  A closed menu is usually what lets a waiter know you're ready.

Third, it keeps soiled napkins off the table.  Now, I can see this being a reason.

But... how do you feel about going to a fancy restaurant and this person you haven't even officially met yet is putting your napkin in your lap for you.  Do you allow this, or are you like my husband and rush to put your napkin in your lap so when the waiter gets there, it's already done. What do you think?

I love a good pun!

True.  I used to write all the time when I was teaching.  Now, not so much.

Have a great week!

  1. I've always put my napkin in my lap. If I'm in a fancy restaurant I let the waiter do this simple thing. I don't move anything on the table except the silverware. When I'm done eating I place the folded napkin to my left to signify I'm done eating.

Love the funnies and the last one made me laugh out loud. Of course the world is a cat.
